Fish and Wildlife Manager

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director, Lands, Resources and Heritage, the Fish and Wildlife Manager will implement the fish and wildlife management program of Selkirk First Nation (SFN) and work with the Selkirk Renewable Resources Council on SFN Settlement Lands and Traditional Territory. The incumbent will assist where needed to coordinate the management of fish and wildlife within the Traditional Territory with the corresponding Federal and Yukon Government agencies, Northern Tutchone First Nation’s and other Yukon First Nations. The incumbent will also assist in the delivery of advice and support to the Selkirk First Nation and the Selkirk Renewable Resources Council in the management of fish and wildlife within the Selkirk First Nation Traditional Territory.

Education/Experience

• Diploma in Renewable Resources Management, or the equivalent in education, training and experience.

• Familiarity with the SFN Final Agreement, Self-Government Agreement and Implementation Plans.

• In-depth knowledge of Chapter 16 of the Selkirk First Nation Agreement and the Self Government Agreement and familiarity with other related chapters (such as 10, 11, 12, 14 and 17).

• Familiarity with Selkirk First Nation, Federal, and Yukon Government structures, legislation, including regulations and policies as they apply to renewable resource management in the Yukon, particularly to the management of fish and wildlife and their habitats.

• Knowledge of hunting, fishing and trapping practises.

• Experience in back country travel and living in northern boreal forest and alpine tundra.

• Knowledge of or experience with techniques of tagging, tranquilizing, netting, and collaring of wildlife.

• Experience writing reports and funding proposals

• Experience using MS Office.

• Ability to work independently and in a team, building trusting relationships.

• Supervisory experience

• Effective communication skills.

Conditions of Employment

• Valid Yukon class 5 driver’s license

• First Aid/CPR or Wilderness First Aid certificates

• Firearms Acquisition Certificate

• Signed Oath of Confidentiality

• Signed Oath of Intoxicants

• Willingness to take job related training
