Job Summary


Reporting to the Mineral Resources Director, the assessment officer is responsible for coordinating and conducting technical reviews of proposed mineral resource development projects within the Selkirk First Nation Traditional Territory. The position provides advice and recommendations on environmental, socio-economic, and cultural considerations to support informed decision making by Selkirk First Nation.

Working collaboratively with project proponents, regulators, government technical consultants and Selkirk First Nation staff, the Assessment Officer participates in environmental assessment, permitting, regulatory review, environmental monitoring, and stewardship activities. The position identifies potential environmental and socio-economic effects, evaluates proposed mitigation measures, and prepares written comments and recommendations to help protect Selkirk First Nation rights, interests, lands, waters and resources while supporting responsible development.

Education/Experience

• Post-Secondary education in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training or experience.

• Experience in environmental assessment, regulatory review, natural resource management, or environmental monitoring is considered an asset.

• Experience working with or alongside First Nations governments and communities is considered an asset

• Strong research, analytical and critical thinking skills

• Ability to review technical reports and identify environmental and socio-economic issues.

• Ability to interpret legislation, regulations, policies, permits, and technical guidance documents.

• Excellent report writing and written communication skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to work with databases.

• Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

• Ability to provide advice and recommendations at the conclusion of environmental and socio-economic assessments to supervisor, Mineral Resources Director and Chief and Council.
