🚒 SSRU Training Coming Up — New Recruits Wanted!

The Scene Safety Response Unit (SSRU) is looking for new recruits – a two-day training session will be held in Pelly Crossing on November 22 & 23, led by the Yukon Fire Marshal’s Office.

This training is open to current and new members. Recruits will be paid wages for their time in training.

What is the SSRU?

The Scene Safety Response Unit is a community-based emergency team that responds to local fires threats. The group was created as an interim step toward forming a volunteer firefighting crew in the future.

Members focus on safety and scene awareness — assessing hazards, setting up safe perimeters, and keeping access clear for emergency responders. In the event of a fire, the SSRU calls in volunteer firefighting units from Mayo or Carmacks for support.

Training and Time Commitment

Initial two-day training (Nov. 22 &23) is provided and paid for by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
✦ Occasional monthly meetings will be held to review safety protocols and practice drills using the SSRU water truck (dates and number of meetings TBD).
✦ Meetings typically last about two hours.
✦ With regular participation, additional training opportunities may be offered by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
✦ Volunteers respond to pager calls on a voluntary basis and are paid for each call they choose to respond to.

Looking Ahead

When our crew reaches eight steady members meeting for six months, Pelly will qualify for advanced training and the equipment needed to form a Volunteer Firefighting Team.
