Employment and Training Services

Offering Support for Skills Development

As a branch of the Citizen Development Department, Employment Training has employment-focused initiatives to assist citizens who are seeking employment and employment training. We offer support to citizens through resume building, career development, and building capacity skills.

Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISETS)

The Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ISETS) program, managed by the Employment and Training Manager, provides vital support for individuals to develop the skills and capacity needed to pursue their career interests. This program offers wage subsidies for employment or mentorship programs, funds for skills development courses, funds for safety work gear, and support for those seeking skills development and job readiness.

If a citizen is actively seeking professional skills, the Employment and Training Manager can often facilitate sending citizens to the training program or bring relevant training programs to Pelly Crossing. Administrative support is also available, assisting individuals in applying for programs and obtaining course prerequisites.

ISETS programs and funds are aimed to ultimately facilitate citizens to enter or re-enter the workforce and advance in their careers through skills training and development.

These employment programs are available to citizens and youth and can include projects such as the Community Garden, the Park and Walkway development, Minto Resorts, and other community beautification projects. Summer Student Employment Program

From June to August, Selkirk First Nation offers various employment opportunities to full-time and returning high school students from age 12 to 18. This program aims at developing capacity and promoting interest in working for Selkirk First Nation within the community. At the end of their work term, students are asked for their feedback on their work experience. If they are interested, we advise them on educational requirements for their field of interest. We then assist them in developing a training plan.

Annual Christmas Work Project

In collaboration with the Yukon Government, Selkirk First Nation hosts a two-week Christmas employment project to support local citizens on break from training or educational courses. Check our seasonal Employment Page for upcoming opportunities as they arise.

Employment Insurance (EI)

Program and Training Subsidy

The Employment and Training Manager provides administrative support to citizens accessing the Canadian Employment Insurance (EI) program and seeking training. To qualify for EI claims, the training must lead to employment. This is an extension of the Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ISETS) agreement with Service Canada. Selkirk First Nation does not provide any direct EI funds. Rather, the Employment and Training Manager assists applicants with the administrative aspects of their applications, once applications are complete, they are then submitted to Service Canada for approval.

Additionally, a limited wage subsidy may be available for a short-term period to citizens accessing EI programs for training opportunities.

Services for Persons with Disabilities

The Employment and Training Officer works with citizens with disabilities to access training that leads to employment. Career counselling and skill assessments are available. Partial financial support may be accessed for those traveling for programs.

Child Care

Financial assistance to pay for childcare is provided to working citizens if the daycare is full. Parents must find their own childcare, and then apply for funding that will go directly to the childminder. This should be a second resort; citizens should first apply to the childcare center.

Please contact the Employment and Training Manager, Mary McGinty for an application form for this service:
