Preschool: Early Childhood Development Center
Dunya Ra Kats Inte Ku – ‘A Place Where Children Learn’
The Early Childhood Development Centre (ECDC) is currently licensed to provide care for a maximum number of 18 children. Open year-round, the center provides services for children from ages 12 months to 8 years, in three separate groups: toddler group, pre-school group, and after-school group. The ECDC is committed to providing childcare along with early years education services to the children in our community. To facilitate these learning and nurturing objectives, we use a play-base approach, where we follow the children’s interests and take their lead in learning together. We emphasize the importance of cultural identity by participating in and teaching Selkirk First Nation traditional practices, we use our environment to foster values, and we implement our ‘Four Guiding Principals’ in daily practice; Sharing, Caring, Teaching, and Respect. Through various activities including storytelling, dancing, and language lessons, children engage with their heritage.
All ECDC staff adhere to the terms and conditions of licence, pursuant to adherence to the Yukon Childcare Act and Regulations and the Regulatory Guidelines. Furthermore, the Centre has skilled staff that continue to grow alongside the children as lifelong learners. For example, the ECDC works in collaboration with other partnerships and agencies in early childhood education, and we encourage all our staff to continue training through programs at the Yukon University to gain their levels as certified Early Childcare Educators.
For further information about the program or to register for the service, please contact the ECDC Manager at (867)537-3058.
